Forgotten Lum is correct--there's at least a fourth theory:

Lum's Chronicler, Rumiko Takahashi, adores certain qualities and casts new characters in a similar role. She loves Lum, but can't cast her in Ranma (Lum's busy elsewhere), and so includes Shampoo instead.

So Lum and Shampoo are related, but not.

I understand Dabu Sensei's theory, but that's not the way I'm thinking.
I'm thinking of anime as reality, not as anime (anime has a writer, reality doesn't).

And about the mother-daughter theory, wouldn't a daughter of Lum have at least some Oni powers? Besides, Shampoo has purple hair, and that color can't come from Ataru or Lum.

I still think they're not related.
